Scholars' Bowl
Overview
Scholars' Bowl is a competition in which participants attempt to quickly and accurately answer trivia questions from all academic areas of study. It is similar to Jeopardy but with a team concept. The game rewards both individual excellence and teamwork. Grades 9-12 are encouraged to participate; Hazel Green typically has at least two teams, a varsity and a junior varsity, sometimes with multiple junior varsity teams. Practices are held once a week after school in my room, S112, until about 5:00. We begin practicing when school starts in August and practice through the end of the competition season, usually in early March. Most of our games are in January and February each year. Scholars' Bowl requires students who are willing to commit to studying academic information from the many trivia lists that I make available to our players. It takes intelligence, desire, and repetition to excel; I consistently see marked improvement, particularly in those players that participate for multiple years.
